Single ply roofing membranes have grown in popularity over the past 30 years, thanks to their flexibility, relative ease of installation and competitive price. They started to become popular when the U.S. market became concerned for the environment and energy conservation. Single-ply membranes offer a great solution. This light-colored, reflective roof surface offers a significant reduction in energy use.

Single ply roof systems are composed of three to four basic components:

• Insulation – an insulating layer to keep heat or cool in and heat or cold out
• Single Ply Membrane – usually rubber or plastic with an acrylic reflective coating
• Flashings – to protect the edges from water seepage
• Adhesive – to meld the layers together

Tests show that the surface temperature of a white roof rises only 4 degrees on a sunny 85-degree day, while on a black or dark colored roof, the temperature rises 42 degrees under the same conditions. Over time, the reflectivity can translate into significant energy savings!
