Headed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the LEED (or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) program is helping transform the way people think about how buildings and communities are designed, constructed, maintained and operated across the globe. Comprehensive and flexible, LEED is a green building tool that addresses the entire building lifecycle recognizing best-in-class building strategies.
LEED provides third-party verification of green buildings. Projects must satisfy certain prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification. USGBC is launching version 4 of the LEED system, which includes major changes to the Materials and Resources category. Specifically, the group is seeking more information and transparency about the environmental and health impacts about building materials and products.
Many products in the roofing industry are going to come under scrutiny and many roofing manufacturers are stepping up to the plate. GAF, one of the largest roofing manufacturers in the country, has received NSF-ISO compliant Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for its EverGuard TPO and EverGuard Extreme roofing products, as well as contributing with Health Product Declarations (HPD) for their EnergyGuard™ Polyiso Insulation as well as the EverGuard TPO roofing products. In short, they are working hard to make sure many of their products comply with the new LEED requirements.
Consumers can look for the LEED seals so they know their manufacturers are a part of the program and working to conserve the environment.
