The winds have shifted to the southeast and are beginning to bring in moisture from the tropics, and that means Monsoon Season is upon us. Normal rainfall is around 2.65 inches in Phoenix, with a record of 9.38 inches in 1984. While the start can vary between mid June and late July, This year, we have an added complication to the Monsoon weather — El Nino, and the long-term forecasts are calling for a chance of above-normal rainfall for the months of June through September.
Whether you have a flat, low slope or steeply pitched roof, it can take extensive damage from just one Monsoon storm — from wind, heavy rains, hail, flying debris, etc. Should your current roof be in need of maintenance or repair, service is recommended before the storms hit. A small, seemingly trivial imperfection in the roof can allow wind driven rain to worm its way under tiles, into the foam or built-up roofing material, under or through shingles … pretty much anything your roof is covered with. Once water arrives at the underlayment and substrate, it often pools there and begins to eat away at the foundation of your roof.

While we recommend repairs and maintenance before the storm, it’s still a good idea to examine your roof for damage after each storm. Even the best roofs can sustain storm damage, and letting it go will generally be more costly than repairing it promptly.
