Metal roofing has been popular for years in cooler climates because it sheds snow and ice so well, but it is also a surprisingly good choice for roofing material in warmer climates.
Researchers in Florida tested seven different roofing systems on identically built properties to see what the air-conditioning needs were based on how well the roof reflected heat. A white reflective metal roof sheds more heat than any of the other test materials (including flat and barrel tile, and light and dark shingles). The white metal roof cut the total power costs by nearly 30% because the heat energy was reflected back into the atmosphere before it could heat the structure below.
Metal roofing, corrugated metal, and corrugated steel are excellent options for the desert southwest and the dry, hot climate. With a proper reflective coating, the brutal summer sun is reflected back into the sky, saving hundreds or even thousands of dollars in cooling costs. And unlike other substances that tend to break down under the harsh summer sun (like asphalt shingles), metal roofing doesn’t degrade as much under the punishing UV rays. Of course, the reflective coating must be reapplied from time to time. While metal roofing is initially more expensive than say asphalt tile, it is an extremely cost-effective option for commercial property because it can last up to 50 years with little or no maintenance except for recoating.
